Artist talk - Helena Kozuchowicz in “Presence”

A conversation with the artist Helena Kozuchowicz, the curator David Ebony, and the NYAA provost Peter Drake. With Q&A about the on view solo show “Presence”.

Helena Kozuchowicz and the solo show “Presence”

Helena Kozuchowicz, a Brazilian visual artist known for her fluid line and bold gestures, presents a series of recent large-scale paintings and works on paper in her first U.S. solo exhibition at the Brazilian Consulate in New York City. The exhibition is on view from January 25 through March 8, 2024.

Curated by David Ebony, the exhibition captures the essence of daily life through Helena’s unique perspective of the figure in space. The collection features portraits of figures inspired by candid moments—adults and children caught off-guard—and rendered in a remarkably spontaneous and engaging manner. Helena’s work invites viewers to explore the beauty found in the ordinary, transforming everyday situations into captivating visual narratives.

Since graduating with a B.A. in Architecture and Urbanism at Escola da Cidade – Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo in São Paolo, Kozuchowicz has been involved in the intersections of architecture and art. For the past several years, she has been developing her own personal artistic vision as a painter, illustrator, and mural artist in public and private spaces. Her knowledge of architectural form has given her a greater understanding of the relationship between the body and space. Very much focused on the human figure, she presents characters engaged in everyday activities transformed into subtle spectacles. Since August of 2022, she has been based in New York City while pursuing an MFA at the New York Academy of Art, class of 2024.

Peter Drake is presently the Provost at the New York Academy of Art, a progressive figurative and representational graduate program in lower Manhattan. David Ebony

Writer and curator David Ebony is a contributing editor of Art in America and Yale University Press. The author of numerous artist monographs, he is also a senior editor at SNAP Editions NYC, and an adjunct professor of art history and theory at the New York Academy of Art.
