Adam Smith 300 Templeton Foundation Lecture – Professor Christel Fricke

Christel Fricke, University of Oslo, NorwayIn this lecture, Professor Christel Fricke will discuss Adam Smith’s approach to ethical theories and their focus on rational and moral agents who are expected to acknowledge normative, moral constraints on their actions. Although Smith acknowledges that people are rational and responsible, he notes that even those who take on the role of an agent often react to the effects of other people’s actions upon them. She will also discuss Smith’s account of the ‘impartial spectator’, the ‘raw material of ethics’ and the importance of mutual sympathy, communication and above all, impartiality, in the process of moral judgement.Please join us for this lecture, which is generously supported by the John Templeton Foundation.
