2023 UCL Economics Conference (Monday Nov 20th Judith Shapiro)

The flagship event of The Economist’s Society, The UCL Economics Conference 2023, is coming up soon! We are excited to host Dr Judith Shapiro as the 2nd speaker of the conference.Dr Shapiro is a part of LSE’s Economics Department and has been an eyewitness to the dramatic changes in both Russia and Ukraine, as a Fulbright Professor in Economics in Soviet Ukraine, a member of Jeffrey Sachs team of advisors in the chaos of post-Soviet Moscow, Chief of the Transition Economies Section of the United Nations Commission for Europe and a Professor at Moscow’s pioneering New Economic School. A Moscow Times profile of her was headlined “Economist at Ground Zero.” Her work on Russia’s 1990s mortality crisis was the first to identify the social stresses of the 1990s. In three co-authored policy books and numerous research articles she has focused on the crisis of the Soviet type of economy. and the alternative paths forward.Come on Monday 20th November to hear Dr Shapiro discuss: “The Tragic Trajectory of Post-Soviet Russia: What Can Economic Analysis Tell Us?”
